I am fairly certain that, as a kid, I would not have consented to counting thousands of ANYTHING. It's not a laziness thing, it's simply not worth it, even as a kid I believe that would have held true for me.
Most of the time, words like "spelt", "burnt" and "learnt" are adverbs. Whereas "spelled", "burned" and "learned" are usually adjectives. In the context of clinnell21's comment, "spelt" is preferable (but not necessary).
