YouTuber Jake Paul is engaged to fellow YouTuber Tana Mongeau as of Monday.
Paul had a meteoric rise to fame as a young YouTube star, but the success of his brand precipitously dropped off in 2018 after he posted a video of a dead body of a person who had presumably committed suicide in Japan's Aokigahara, commonly known as the 'suicide forest.'
The backlash to the video was swift and fierce. Even YouTube condemned the video, stating, "We expect more of the creators who build their community on YouTube, as we’re sure you do too. The channel violated our community guidelines, we acted accordingly, and we are looking at further consequences." YouTube went on to say that, "Suicide is not a joke, nor should it ever be a driving force for views."
Mongeau's latest controversy was her creation of "TanaCon," an alternative to VidCon created to allow fans to boycott VidCon because they would not give her the credentials of a "Featured Creator." The event failed fantastically, sparking comparisons with Fyre Fest, the fake music festival that inspired two major documentaries. Mongeau has also signed on to do a reality television show on MTV.
The controversy does not end there, though. Due to the nature of YouTube stardom, Paul's and Mongeau's exes are a large source of contention for fans, some of whom feel that there were better partners for Paul or Mongeau in the past. Mongeau's ex-girlfriend Bella Thorne posted a video of herself crying on Instagram with the caption, "when ur ex gets engaged."
Bella Thorne has sparked controversy of her own recently when she released a collection of nude photos in the interest of deterring a hacker who was threatening her with the same.
So, all things considered, the Paul household should be a pretty interesting one. Here's what some folks on Twitter thought about the news.
