Her name is Lynja and she’s been taking over cookingtok since the beginning of quarantine. Armed with her humble recipes, witty cartoonish humor, and some sharp video-editing from her son Tim, Cooking with Lynja has become a hit with those stuck at home and already bored with baking bread for the past year.
With 3 million followers and counting, Lynja has become not only the contested queen of cooking TikTok but also the app’s favorite grandma. Perusing her videos, you’ll find plenty of comments saying things like, “I would like for her to be my new grandma,” and “Lynja you are my daily dose of serotonin.”
Seems a little weird, but hey that’s just how the kids relate these days. Cooking everything from simple chocolate chip cookies to microwave Thai noodles, Lynja’s cooking show has all the humor and simplicity for ironic college humor kids everywhere.

For younger audiences, Lynja’s recipes are not only easy to follow but her brand of humor clocks Zoomers right on the nose. Videos will include hilarious jump cuts, meme references, and an always present small Lynja superimposed into shots. What started off as a 30 videos in 30 days challenge from her son Tim, has blossomed into an adored internet fixture.
In an interview with VICE discussing her online success, Lynja said, “I believe the videos became popular because I am an older person on an app where a large part of the audience is much younger than me. I think people are surprised by the dichotomy of someone my age using pop culture references.”
Regardless, Lynja is a very online boomer, and her internet cred shows. How often do you see a grandma make grilled cheese out of Mountain Dew, reference Minecraft, and then refer to a crab leg as a “sea glizzy”? Yeah, that’s what we thought.
Even though 2020 was a heck of a year, at the very least it’s given us this lovably quirky, TikTok cooking grandma. Our girl Lynja not only has jokes but some mad cooking skills and a place forever in our hearts.
