As the world teeters on the brink of WWIII, the internet has exploded with a debate for the ages. In sandwiches, should it be grated or sliced cheese? Experts have weighed in.
I will prelude this by saying, as an expert in sandwiches with two different subway employments under my belt, I know a thing or two about sandwich construction. I was fired from both of these jobs, but that was for how literally I took my ‘Sandwich Artists’ title. They weren’t ready for my artistic innovations. But, I digress.
There has been a debate sparked online as to whether grated or sliced cheese is the best choice for a sandwich. Some people like the coverage possible by grated, while others prefer the tidiness of sliced. Sandwich fans are passionate about their preferred cheese fillings, too.
Sliced Or Grated For The Perfect Sandwich
I would think the answer is obvious, but many people still need it spelled out for them. For a cold sandwich, a good slice or a couple of slices of cheese are required. For a hot sandwich, grate away before melting it.
Grated melts better, and gets all up in that sandwich. Slices aren’t messy and provide an equal mouthful for every bite. Dr Nutsuda Sumonsiri, a lecturer in food science and technology at Teesside University, agrees.
“For a cold sandwich, sliced cheese is generally preferable,” she told the MailOnline. It “retains structure and provides a more even mouthfeel,” compared to grated. However, when it comes to grating on a toasted sandwich, it’s the preferred choice. “The greater surface area of the smaller cheese pieces allows it to melt more quickly and evenly, improving overall texture and cohesion between bread layers.”
Thousands of pounds of debt, and years of lost youth, to be quoted as the doctor of cheese sandwiches.
Getting deeper into the science of sandwiches, sliced cheese will often become rubbery when heated. Due to the larger surface area, there is a chance that only the outside will melt, leaving the inside uncooked. This leaves Grated as the only real choice for a heated sandwich.
Sandwiches are always down to personal reference, and there are a million different combinations. The real debate should be what bread is best.
