Is flying 6,000 miles for a second date a red flag? I think it kind of is, but maybe I’m just bitter.
A casual drink in a hotel bar in Taiwan turned into a modern retelling of Before Sunrise. Grace Kelly was on holiday and unwinding with a drink when her eyes met someone’s across the bar. They got chatting, and before she knew it, they had hit it off.
Within a few hours, they had become infatuated. Holiday romances have a habit of being fast, intense, but limited. “We were literally talking about our ideal futures and living on a farm in Scotland with dogs and chickens, and goats within hours of meeting,” Kelly told Jam Press.
The sparks were flying, and 6,000 miles from home, they let their love blossom on their first date. As the bar began closing up, they decided to squeeze every minute of what could potentially be the only time they had together.
“That first night, we were enjoying each other’s company so much that we decided to stay up all night and make the most of the few hours we had.” Pulling a super smooth first date move, her one-night lover made a suggestion. “The hotel bar was closing, so he suggested we go to his restaurant at midnight to make pasta from scratch…”
Intercontinental Love
But the night needed to come to an end eventually, and as the sun came up, they had to say goodbye. He had a job in Taiwan, and her holiday was over. Typically, this would be the end of a beautiful flash romance, but Kelly was determined there would be a second date.
Despite the distance and time zone difference, they kept in contact. For three weeks, they talked until she couldn’t take it anymore and decided to fly the 6,000 miles for a second date. “I was so nervous going out there, but I’d arranged my own hotel just in case things didn’t go to plan,” she said.
But, it appeared he had missed her as much as she missed him. He made sure to show her his affections, too. “As soon as I arrived there, he’d arranged for flowers to be waiting in my hotel room, and he swooped me up as soon as the hotel elevator doors opened.”
They’ve been making a go of it ever since, meeting one another’s families and planning for the future. I just hope they don’t watch the next two films from the Linklater trilogy.
