Summer is here, and so is the stifling heat. Here are a few tips and tricks to keep your internal temperature cool during the inevitable 100°F+ heat wave.
Heat stroke happens when your internal temperature reaches 104°F (40c). Heat stroke is no friendly customer and will cause confusion, altered mental state, slurred speech, and sometimes seizures. It can be very serious, meaning staying cool in a heat wave is medically essential.
Get Under Air Con
It might sound like an obvious answer, but there’s no beating air conditioning. If you’re unlucky enough not to have it during the height of the day, there are some solutions. Head somewhere that always has it.
One of my favorite spots to go is the cinema. Go watch a movie from midday till 3 pm. Those beautiful dark rooms are always Baltic.
Give Yourself Space To Recharge
Some of us have to be out in the heat of the sun due to work or madness. So, if you’ve been out tanning all day, give your body a rest at night. During a heat wave, ensure you stay cool when you sleep. This gives your body a chance to recover from the day and build lost energy.
Head Out Of The Heat Wave
The top of your head is almost always in the direct path of the sun. The problem with that is the fact that your brain is also right there. Sitting your brain in direct sunlight all day will cook your grey matter into a stew.
Buy a sunhat that provides decent shade. If it’s big enough, it’ll not only protect your precious brain but also keep your shoulders and neck from the rays. Don’t be scared, get yourself a huge straw sombrero.
Key Body Cool Points In A Heat Wave
You may not have enough water to drench your whole body, but there are key points you can cool to bring your temperature down in a heat wave. Placing a cold, wet rag on your neck, armpits, wrists, and feet will lower your total body temperature.
Also, if given the opportunity, go for the full wet t-shirt competition. Dunk your top in water and wear it. Nobody will mind.
Nice, Tall, Cold Drink
I’m not saying it has to be an ice-cold beer, but it could be. Fill your body with cold drinks to quickly lower your internal temperature. You should be drinking as much as you can in extreme heat anyway.
