I’ve never been a fan of the usual wedding locations in restored barns or echoey churches. But, if someone told me they planned to get married in a sandwich shop with free food and drinks, I’d be in my suit quicker than you could blink.
The owner of Gino’s Cheese Steak & Onion in a small town in New York has decided to do just that. He and his fiancée always planned to get married in his sandwich shop, but they’ve had to move it forward. Now, they’re throwing a big closing-down/wedding party to say goodbye to the shop, and hello to their lives together.
The sandwich shop went viral some years ago for its bright pink sandwich sauce. It was in honor of the Barbie movie’s success, and it blew the little store into a viral sensation. Now, however, it’s curtains for the place, and time to move on.
“We had planned to get married this fall, right here at the restaurant. When that suddenly wasn’t in the cards anymore, we decided to fast-track it,” they explained on Facebook. “So tomorrow from 5 pm to 8 pm, we’re throwing a wedding. Free food, free drinks. We didn’t get a whole lot of notice that this was happening, and we’ve gotta clear out the coolers anyway. This felt like the most fun, most “on-brand” way to close. Once we run out, we run out.”
One Wedding And A Funeral
It’s the end of the viral sandwich shop, but the couple getting married is sending it off in the perfect way. The support that has been given has been overwhelming. The couple is not asking for anything for the food and drink at the happy event, but have said that any donations will go towards the staff about to be out of a job.
With almost 7k likes and 2k comments, people are flocking to show their support. Many have asked how they can donate to the staff without even attending the wedding. The sandwich shop has garnered a lot of love.
But the happy couple isn’t certain what the future holds yet. However, by the looks of their sandwiches, I think it would be a crime not to open another site up. “Another location? Maybe. A new concept? Possibly. A future partnership? Who knows. I’m open to anything and everything that comes my way. In the meantime, I’ll finally have a chance to finish my book, maybe start a podcast. You know, typical midlife crisis stuff brought on by crushing trauma.”
