Kylie Kardashian is facing sharp backlash for throwing her friend "Stassie" a Handmaid's Tale themed birthday party this weekend, featuring drinks named after important motifs in the show. The show depicts a world in which women are heavily oppressed, and many see it as a cautionary tale for what's happening in the real world. Kardashian says that it's her favorite show, but in light of the mismatch in tone, some are wondering, "Has she actually seen it?"
Kylie Jenner made a bold party theme choice over the weekend when she decided to throw her friend Anastasia “Stassie” Karanikolaou a Handmaid’s Tale themed 22nd birthday party.
Given the gravity of the show’s premise, and, as Buzzfeed puts it, depiction of “a dystopian society in which women are stripped of all rights, selected for their fertility, and routinely [forcefully penetrated] before being forced into childbirth,” it would seem to make a really awful choice for a party theme.
The choice has widely been regarded as a bad move, and, as The Daily Beast notes, that it comes in the midst of a nation-wide women’s rights crisis just illustrates how far out of touch the Kardashians/Jenners really are.
Not surprisingly, people on Twitter began to fire back for the cluelessness that seems to often surround the Kardashian/Jenner clan.
