The US is currently dealing with a pretty nasty measles outbreak, and a whole group of people at a Shakira concert may have just been exposed to it.
In the US, there have been numerous reports of measles outbreaks. Due to unvaccinated people and a lack of understanding, the old disease has made a bit of a comeback. Now, a super spreader event may have just occurred in New Jersey.
The ‘Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran’ show Shakira performed is suspected to be a huge outbreak of measles for those who attended unvaccinated. Thousands of fans enjoyed the show in the MetLife Stadium on both dates she played.
According to experts, anyone who attended her concert on either May 15 or the second New Jersey date could be infected. This was after an attendee was found to have measles after the show. Doctors warn that exposed individuals could “develop symptoms as late as June 6.’
Americans travelled from all over the US to see Shakira play, and may now have spread the disease across the face of the country. Attendees to the show are advised to keep a close eye on their health in the coming weeks and head straight to a doctor if they suspect they are infected with measles.
Huge Measles Outbreak In The US
In 2000, the US managed to attain its measles-free status, having essentially eradicated it from the country. This lowered people’s fears of the most infectious disease in the world, and it slipped from Americans’ collective minds. This has resulted in fewer people being vaccinated or having their children vaccinated.
However, a massive measles outbreak in Texas has reignited fears of a resurgence. According to the CDC, “As of May 15, 2025, a total of 1,024 confirmed measles cases were reported.” That’s a number that is concerning for anyone currently unvaccinated because 3 of these cases have resulted in deaths.
But a potential measles outbreak at the Shakira concert could spread the disease across the entire country. The sickness could strike, in the famous works of Shakira herself, “Whenever, Wherever.”
