Few countries in the world idolize war as much as the US. Media, entertainment, parades, music, and religion all heavily feature the Brave Troops™. So, when Trump sent over a bunch of stealth bombers to blast Iran into ash for Israel, akin to the latest Top Gun, the crowds went wild.
American war films are, on the whole, propaganda machines used to justify the exorbitant war spending and waste of lives the US loves to dish out around the world. There are a few exceptions, of course, but Top Gun is not one of them.
There is rarely any subtlety in the war games and films produced in the US. Sure, the enemies are in an unnamed country. But, they will always look and sound a certain way, pertaining to the stereotype of the current US international enemy.
Top Gun Maverick took place in an area of the world that looked remarkably like Iran. Mountainous landscapes concealed hidden military bunkers. The enemy also uses F-14 Tomcats. The only country using the old US planes is Iran. It couldn’t be more on the nose.
Like Watching A Top Gun Play By Play
When Trump announced that “We have completed our very successful attack on the three Nuclear sites in Iran, including Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan,” the internet exploded. Using military jets to clear the airspace, American B-2 stealth bombers had dropped 30,000-pound bunker busters on strategic Iranian locations.
People flocked to the internet to compare the bombing of Iran to the plot of Top Gun. As they say, art imitates life. Many people wondered how on earth the writers at the studio had managed to predict the very events that had unfolded.
But, for anyone with even a modicum of critical thinking, this whole attack was in the works for years. It was only a matter of time before it happened. Even Trump correctly predicted the “future president” going to war with Iran. He didn’t realise he would end up fulfilling that prophecy himself, though.
The events in Top Gun were certainly a lot more exciting than the events that unfolded over the skies of Iran. But that’s the nature of propaganda.
