When art is no longer allowed to be political, it is no longer art.
The genocide in Palestine, being funded by both the US and UK, has inspired many artists to stand against Israel and the atrocities they are committing. Several have become outspoken representatives for the majority of the population, calling on governments to stop being complicit in the war crimes.
Instead, these artists are being persecuted for their opinions. We have seen numerous musicians being investigated, silenced, sued, and now also banned from the United States. A punk band, comprised of Bobby and Bobbie Vylan, has been told they are no longer welcome in the United States for their views on Palestine.
The US, becoming more totalitarian by the day, is so fragile that it has to resort to banning artists from the country. A recent statement by Secretary Christopher Landau said, “The @StateDept has revoked the US visas for the members of the Bob Vylan band in light of their hateful tirade at Glastonbury, including leading the crowd in death chants. Foreigners who glorify violence and hatred are not welcome visitors to our country.”
United States Government Too Fragile To Risk Alternate Views From Punk Band
The offending act that resulted in the band being banned from the United States was an anti-war chant at Glastonbury. “Death, Death To The IDF,” Bobby Vylan led the crowd in calling out on a live BBC broadcast. The audience joined, calling for the downfall of the genocidal army at large in Palestine.

This was not a call for violence against Jewish people or Israeli settlers. It was a call for the demise of a military presence. However, the United States is funding the IDF; they’ve got billions of dollars of skin in the game. The United States, between 1946 and 2024, gave $228 billion in military aid to the IDF.

Now, band Bobby Vylan has been banned from the United States, but I don’t think they’re all that fussed. They played Glastonbury, they made a statement they will stand behind, and they have solidified themselves in the eyes of the public as people willing to sacrifice for freedom of speech. Integrity over genocidal complicity, every day.
A country needs to start worrying when its government starts to censor people. As of late, students, professors, and artists have all had their freedoms taken away. The United States is on a slippery slope to a draconian dictatorship.
It’s shocking to see artists being punished for standing against genocide. When art isn’t free, nor are the people.
