There are few smells quite as disgusting as rotting meat. It’s a smell that lingers, gets right up your nose, and tells every sense in your body to get the hell away from it. So, when a meat shop was abandoned, it didn’t take long for the local neighbourhood to become uninhabitable.
Folks trying to live a stink-free life in Ogden and South Ogden, Utah, noticed that their local meat shop had been seemingly abandoned. The owner shut up shop one day and never returned. This wouldn’t be too much of an issue had the place been cleaned out. However, it quickly became evident that it wasn’t.
“In March, we noticed that nobody was coming by anymore, the owner. And then Memorial Day, we had a campout in our backyard with my kids, and we just couldn’t stomach the smell that was coming out of there,” a local resident explained to FOX13.
Having to live by a meat shop’s worth of rotten meat would produce a phenomenally bad smell. As the heat of summer builds, it’ll only get worse, too. “I’ve never experienced anything like how gross this place is in my life,” the resident continued. “It smells like there are 100 bodies in there rotting. It’s just so bad.”
Time To Take A Vacation
The meat shop is a processing center for carcasses. Since the owner abandoned it, there have been cuts of meat left to spoil and stink. Eventually, the fire department was called to find out what the problem was. “They would come over for campfires and stuff, and they would have their kids come over for s’mores. And ever since then, ever since they abandoned this, they haven’t been back.”
So, local fire services managed to gain entrance to the building. The poor staff had to wade into the solid stench of the rotting meat. They found that the meat shop had been abandoned with numerous carcasses, causing a horrific stink.
But, although they gained access, it wasn’t up to them to clear it away. Officials said that the meat, although stinky, isn’t considered hazardous to health. So, there isn’t a huge rush to remove it. Apparently, it will take several days for them to clean the area. That smell will linger for weeks.
