I fit the average serial killer description to a T. The federal probation study states that they are often “a white male, between the ages of 25 to 34. Charismatic, charming, intelligent, and mobile.” However, according to a new study, my job as a writer doesn’t fit the typical serial killer stereotype.
Certain criminals will often choose specific jobs that make their insane predilections easier. Fraudsters will work in secure areas like banks. People who love drugs work as line chefs. And child molesters become priests or teachers.
But, according to a study by a former FBI agent, serial killers will often take a job as a long-distance truck driver. This, according to the FBI guy, is the job best suited to their gruesome hobby. Frank Figliuzzi believes there could be thousands of undiscovered serial killers working in the long-haul job.
Tortureous Truck Drivers
It makes sense if you think about it. Long-haul truck drivers spend their lives on the road, transient and unnoticed. They spend long hours on lonely roads, hopping from pit stop to pit stop. They are able to move in the darkness without suspicion. Furthermore, they also always have a reason they happen to be somewhere at any given time.
Figliuzzi stated that his research showed that hitchhikers and prostitutes are often the target of serial killers. Both of these people are often found in truck stops and along the sides of roads. Anyone looking to get a bit of serial killing done would be spoilt for choice in a long-haul job.
There have been many examples in the past of serial killers with this particular job. In some cases, the killer has actually turned their truck into a prison and torture chamber. Robert Ben Rhodes used his cab to torture and murder two hitchhiking couples. The serial killer truck driver is suspected of being responsible for many more murders, too.
Figliuzzi has proposed his study and hopes the FBI will take it on board. “If I have one message to any law enforcement officer listening, it’s to get your unsolved cases, especially involving roadside killings, into the FBI database.”
