The idea of being on a cruise is lovely. Endless delicious food and drink, a wealth of activities to stay occupied with, and regular calls to beautiful international ports. But, according to a few regular cruise ship passengers, there’s one aspect that is really terrifying.
Personally, the idea of a cruise isn’t all that appealing. I would be all good with the new ports every other day, but the idea of being stuck on a boat would certainly start to feel claustrophobic. I understand why so many pirates were alcoholics.
Another thing is the possibility of virus outbreaks. That many people fraternising in a closed area is sure to breed sickness. I know plenty of norovirus outbreaks that have taken down a whole cruise ship.
But, according to many passengers, boredom or sickness isn’t what scares them most. It’s the ominous, silent blackness of the ocean. The void that looks back.
Hello? Is There Anybody Out There?
We have surrounded ourselves with light on land. You’ll be hard-pressed to find somewhere that isn’t suffering from at least a little light pollution. So, when we’re faced with true darkness, it can be really unnerving.
On a cruise ship, deep into the ocean, there is no light outside of what the ship throws around itself. The glaring lights on board only make the lightless void of the ocean even scarier. As a poster pointed out online, if you fall in there, you’re completely alone. There is absolutely no chance of being seen.

Of course, if the ship turned off all its lights, the true majesty of the cosmos would light up the night. It’s the lights of the ship that make it so dark. Being in true darkness with a clear sky is something everyone, at some point, should witness.
But being on a cruise ship, backed by lights, and staring out into the ocean is enough to give many passengers the heebie jeebies. For many, it’s the thought of dropping off the side of the cruise ship and into the seemingly endless, shining, black nothingness out there.
It’s amazing anyone is ever found.
