You’re never too old to try something new, as a grandmother gets inked with her granddaughter, honoring one another with matching tattoos.
People always ask the tattoo-covered, “Won’t you regret that when you’re older?” But for Abby Griffin’s grandmother, she’s already there. Getting her first tattoo at 87 was a fun bonding experience for her and her granddaughter.
The story went viral on social media, so People stepped in to find out what the whole situation was about. Apparently, the grandmother-granddaughter combo had talked about matching tattoos for years.
“She’s always had this fun, bold, and spunky streak that keeps everyone on their toes,” Griffin told People. “As she’s gotten older, I started feeling like this would be a beautiful way to commemorate her, her fire, her boldness, and her commitment to always being unapologetically herself.”
Cool Grandma Gets Inked
As they say, it’s good to try everything once. When Griffin’s grandmother grew up, tattoos were taboo, especially on women. Now, everyone and their dog has something inked into their skin. She’s taken the opportunity to get one herself, along with her relative.
She didn’t go for anything wild, either. A nice hummingbird on the shoulder is all she’s chosen to match her granddaughter. Eventually, her daughter will also get the tattoo, making it a multi-generational experience.

“My sister couldn’t be there that day, but she’s planning to get the same hummingbird soon so she can be part of it too. What started as a simple idea turned into this incredibly special multi-generational experience, something we’ll all remember forever,” she explained.
The design of the matching tattoos the grandmother and granddaughter opted for has a special relevance to the elderly lady. “My grandma has always loved gardening and being outside; she lights up when she sees hummingbirds zipping around her backyard. But beyond just being her favorite, the hummingbird felt symbolic for her.”
It’s a great way to commemorate a special moment shared between three generations. It’s not too often you’ll see an old woman with a fresh tattoo, either. Although as the current generation grows, there’s going to be a lot of old people with faded ones.
