Hollywood’s favorite couples, sadly, don’t always stay together.
Whether the relationship was just for a few months or over a decade, these couples decided to part ways for the sake of their children, careers, or simply their own personal happiness.
These eight power couples not only had their hearts broken in 2018 but also made people question whether or not love is real.
Justin Theroux and Jennifer Aniston
Justin Theroux and Jennifer Aniston actually met back in 2007, while on the set for the movie “Tropic Thunder.” They met again in 2010, while Jennifer was starring in the movie “Wanderlust.”
Following “Wanderlust,” the two connected and started dating back in May 2011. Justin popped the question to Jen, on his birthday in August 2012. After a three-year engagement, they finally got married in August of 2015. Everything seemed to be going great for the couple.
However, the pair made their separation announcement, just one day after Valentine’s Day 2018.
In their announcement, they said to the public: “We are two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple, but look forward to continuing our cherished friendship. Normally we would do this privately, but given that the gossip industry cannot resist an opportunity to speculate and invent, we wanted to convey the truth directly.”
Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan
Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan first started dating in late 2006, after meeting each other while filming the movie “Step Up” together.
In 2008, the couple got engaged and in July 2009, they got married.
Almost four years later, in May 2013, they welcomed the baby girl, Everly, into the world.
Sadly, in April 2018, Channing and Jenna both shared on their Instagram that they have both chose to separate and end their nine-year marriage. “Absolutely nothing has changed about how much we love one another, but love is a beautiful adventure that is taking us on different paths for now. There are no secrets nor salacious events at the root of our decision — just two best-friends realizing it’s time to take some space and help each other live the most joyous, fulfilled lives as possible.”
John Cena and Nikki Bella
John and Nikki started dating in 2012 after being good friends for years.
After five years of dating, John proposed to Nikki at Wrestlemania 33 in April 2017.
However, a year later, the couple called off their engagement and released a statement, saying: “While this decision was a difficult one, we continue to have a great deal of love and respect for one another. We ask that you respect our privacy during this time in our lives.”
Liam Payne and Cheryl Cole
In 2008, Cheryl Cole met Liam Payne. Liam was auditioning for the X- Factor while Cheryl was a judge on the show. Liam was only 14 years old at the time, while Cheryl was 10 years older! Unfortunately, another X-Factor judge, Simon Cowell, thought that Liam was too young for the business, so he asked that he come back in a few years.
Liam made his X-Factor return just 2 years later, at the age of 16, and Cheryl actually remembered him.
Six years and many relationships later, it seemed that Liam and Cheryl had reconnected and were spending more time with each other. But the two of them were determined to keep things private.
After teasing on social media, the couple finally announced that they were, in fact, a couple in 2016. In March 2017, Cheryl and Liam had a baby boy named Bear. After rumors speculating on their relationship, the couple took to Twitter in July 2018, to share that they are going to go their separate ways. “We still have so much love for each other as a family. Bear is our world and we ask that you respect his privacy as we navigate our way through this together.”
Sam Smith and Brandon Flynn
Sam Smith and Brandon Flynn were first seen together in early October 2017. By the end of that October, Sam confirmed on “Ellen” that he was no longer “insanely single.”
Sam seemed truly happy with Brandon but after 9 months of dating, their busy schedules tore them apart.
The couple was officially over in June 2018.
Millie Bobby Brown and Jacob Sartorius
Millie and Jacob first debuted their relationship to the public in December 2017.
While the two of them were relatively young and had busy schedules, they made time for each other through texts, phone calls, and Facetime.
In July 2018, Millie and Jacob both released their decision to split on their respective Instagram Stories. Millie put up text on her story, saying: “The decision with Jacob and I was completely mutual. We are both happy and remaining friends.”
Sarah Silverman and Michael Sheen
Silverman and Sheen started dating back in February 2014.
Four years later in February 2018, the distance between the couple had widened. Silverman was living in Los Angeles and Sheen had been living in the United Kingdom with his daughter from a previous marriage.
But the way that Silverman announced their separation was honestly quite amusing.
She said in a tweet: “The great @michaelsheen & I consciously uncoupled over Christmas. I mean, not ‘over Christmas’ — like that wasn’t the fight that ended it. No fight. We just live in different countries & it got hard. Felt we should just tell y’all so u stop asking, ‘How’s Michael/How’s Sarah?'”
Alicia Silverstone and Christopher Jarecki
Alicia Silverstone got together with Christopher Jarecki over 20 years ago. The former Clueless start first met Jarecki outside of a movie theater in 1997. After eight years of dating, the couple officially got married in 2005. In 2011, the couple had their first and only son, Bear Blu.
In February 2018, news broke out that Alicia and Christopher were no longer together.
A representative for Silverstone released in a statement: “They still deeply love and respect each other and remain very close friends but have mutually decided to separate after being together for 20 years. They have a son together who they will continue to co-parent.”
