Tessa Thompson’s enigmatic “Valkyrie” character in the Marvel Universe has officially been confirmed as a member of the LGBTQ community by Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday.
According to one well-prepared Twitter user, the announcement doesn’t actually change much, since Valkyrie, who originates from the Thor comic series created by Marvel, has always been lesbian, providing images from the comics for proof.
The announcement includes the revelation that Natalie Portman has signed on to play Thor in Thor 4.
Thompson hinted at the development earlier, stating that, “as new King [of Asgard], she needs to find her queen, so that will be her first order of business. She has some ideas. Keep you posted.”
Many fans took to Twitter to express their opinions on the subject. Some saw it as a welcome increase in the LGBTQ community’s visibility within the Marvel Universe, while others saw it as a dangerous manifestation of PC culture gone too far.
