Huge flash floods have swept across Texas, taking buildings, cars, and livelihoods with them. One couple survived by the skin of their teeth after clinging to a post for hours as they watched a Texas flood take their home.
In an interview with People, the couple recalled their harrowing ordeal. Doug and Elizabeth Fuller had made peace with the fact that the day may be their last as they were swept away. But, by some miracle, they managed to survive.
As the Texas rains fell, Doug was getting numerous flood warnings on his phone. However, living in the floodplains, this was nothing new. It was a regular occurrence, and he and his wife didn’t think too much of it. There may be some floods, but their home was usually safe.
However, when he glanced outside and saw the wall of water approaching his home, he knew that this was no ordinary flood. It was around 4 am, and as the flood became severe, Doug realized his home was about to become submerged.
“I watched my car start to float away,” he says, “but then it got really scary when water started coming through the electrical sockets [in the house] and then the back door.”
Texas Couple Try To Flee Flood
Realizing that the floodwater was about to take their home, the Texas couple made their way higher in the building. Doug, being a musician, kept his livelihood safe first and stored his two guitars in the attic. But, there was no space for them, so as the flood waters came into the house, it began to wash them away.
Initially, the couple held on to a door frame. But, the rising rushing water was too much for them and it sucked them out of their home. As they were pulled from their house, Doug believed they would die. “I thought, ‘I really don’t want to die. This sucks and this is not cool.”
But Doug managed to grab hold of a cedar post outside his home. His wife, swimming against the Texas floodwater, reached him. Doug grabbed her by the pants, and they clung on for dear life. The Texas couple hung on for hours as the flood waters pulled at them.
“It sounded like a freight train and a tornado fighting,” Doug recalled. “We watched buildings wash by. We watched them completely disappear.” But they persevered and eventually touched the ground once more. They were taken to a local emergency center, where they were both treated for minor injuries.
