Watching people drive their cars through flooding always makes me question just how bad a grasp on the concept of a combustion engine the average Joe has. Footage of a woman driving her car through a flooding tunnel was almost too much.
The problems begin with a car when water gets into the engine. The perpetual explosions that make a car move mustn’t get wet. As soon as certain spots fill with water, the engine is cooked. People forget this and think their cars can cruise through flooding areas.
When you combine this with a tunnel that has a cascade of water rapidly filling it up, it’s a recipe for disaster. Trapped in a flooding tunnel doesn’t sound like a particularly nice way to go.
But that didn’t stop a woman and her passenger from deciding to drive through a flooding tunnel in a car that certainly wasn’t equipped for the situation.
A Lucky Escape
Despite the water running over the bonnet of the car, the driver in the almost flooded vehicle stays calm. With a normal vehicle like this, if the water submerged the engine, it would be game over.
Somehow, despite the flooding, the car managed to stay at just the right speed not to flood the engine. There is debris and cones throughout the flooded tunnel. As they come towards the light at the end, it’s clear someone else hasn’t made it.
In the lane they’re using, another flooded tunnel hopeful washed up and is out of luck. Their car has quit, as most cars would, but somehow, the footage shows this one soldiering on. They keep the speed low and pull around the stranded vehicle.
As they emerge from the other side, somehow still moving, the waterfall of floodwater can be seen pouring from the other side, too. It’s a miracle that they managed to drag their car through the whole flooded tunnel without a complete breakdown.
For future reference, if you don’t have a car equipped for flooding, then it’s usually best not to try to hobble it through a tunnel.
