I didn’t know people still had surviving Tamagotchi, let alone that they were able to have a wedding and get married.
It was an early sign that I wouldn’t be a great pet owner, with the rate at which I allowed my Tamagotchi to die when I was a kid. The cheap, plastic toys from Japan took the world by storm when I was still in school. It was the early years of handheld video games, and these simple pixel pets were a revolution.
Despite being super simple, they seemed to be able to perform the function of a basic pet. They needed cleaning, feeding, petting, and even playing with as the later versions came out. The most recent editions dropped in 2023. But since 2004, there has been the ability to marry Tamagotchi to one another.
Using this feature, a group in Toronto wanted to set a new world record. Bringing hundreds of Tamagotchi together, they planned to host the largest digital wedding in the world. People turned up in their multitudes for the big day.
Tamagotchi Knot Tying
According to Toronto Today, over 180 people showed up at the Cecil Community Centre. The event was organised on Instagram, stating, “Tama characters can get married to other devices in-game. Let’s celebrate love and friendship in our community, and find your Tamagotchi character a mate IRL! Marry your Tamagotchi and make history, or come party to celebrate gotchi luv!”
The event organiser, Twoey Gray, noted that there wasn’t a pre-existing record for the largest Tamagotchi wedding. That’s hardly surprising. So, they decided to set one. At this point, it isn’t clear if the Guinness World Record officials have accepted the attempt, but they should.
According to Grey, over 100 people had their Tamagotchi married at the wedding event. It was a feast of virtual love, and many new Tamagotchi will have been born as a result. The participants had a great time with the whole thing.
Pictures from the event show Tamagotchi owners wearing sashes, throwing confetti, and receiving wedding cards. There were even fireworks to commemorate the big day. Despite their niche, many Tamagotchi found love that day.
