The JD Vance meme that’s been around for a few months is hilarious, but may also result in you being denied entry to the US.
After the fateful Zalensky-JD Vance ” You should say thank you” interview, the internet did its thing. Already, people were laughing at the fact that the vice president had edited photography for a more pronounced chin. Once he made a fool of himself on national TV, they decided to undo all his hard work.
Within days, the internet was flooded with JD Vance memes of his face edited to look like a party balloon. Image after image covered social media, and there was no getting away from it. JD Vance seemed to take it well enough, until recently, anyway.
Mads Mickelson, a 21-year-old Norwegian tourist, was denied entry into the US after a JD Vance meme was found on his phone. At New Jersey’s Newark airport, he was detained concerning “smuggling and extremism,” according to Nordlys, a Norwegian paper.
Despite having no criminal record, he was strip-searched, had his blood taken, fingerprinted, and held for five hours. He was also told to give them full access to his phone. Here, they found the JD Vance meme, and he was turned away from the US and denied entry.
CBP Denies Norwegian JD Vance Denial Claims
The story of the Norwegian tourist being denied entry to the US over a saved JD Vance meme went viral across the world. The US is already under scrutiny for being abhorrent to both immigrants and tourists, but this was a new level for foreign visitors.
The world spends a lot of time laughing at the state of the US. Most of us have something ridiculing the country somewhere on our social media. I don’t imagine many would withstand much scrutiny.
Fact Check: FALSE
— CBP (@CBP) June 24, 2025
Mads Mikkelsen was not denied entry for any memes or political reasons, it was for his admitted drug use. pic.twitter.com/is9eGqILUq
However, in a statement on X, CBP denied the claims that the Norwegian tourist was turned away because of the JD Vance meme. They claim that a picture of a hand-carved wooden pipe was the real cause of the denial. They claimed that this amounted to admitted drug use and was enough for them to send him home.
This excuse is hardly believable and puts even the most draconian governments to shame. I know I certainly won’t be going anywhere near the US until it becomes significantly less terrifying.
