After entering a property in New Orleans, a cop pulled his gun and shot an 18-month-old puppy to death. The owners have now brought forward a lawsuit against the man.
Burmaster and his partner responded to a call about a public disturbance in the Lower Garden District of New Orleans in 2021. The bodycam footage shows the two police officers checking the yard initially by making ‘kissing noises.’
With guns drawn, they enter the yard of the couple’s home. As they entered the property, two dogs ran over to the intruders. One of them was a larger dog, and the other was a puppy. They came at speed, and both were barking.
However, while the other cop backed out of the gate, Burmaster can be seen to cover his crotch with one hand, and shoot the puppy three times with the other. The cop then backs out of the gate and locks it, leaving the puppy dead in the yard.
The couple came running outside to see what the noise was, and found their puppy shot to death. “Oh my God, what did you do, what did you do,” the owner wailed. “No, no, no! That’s a baby, that’s a puppy,” she continues.
Puppy Killer Cop Faces No Charges For Shooting Puppy
An investigation after the incident looked into the way that the cop behaved, shooting the puppy. It was discovered that he had, once before, done the same thing with another dog. He was also found not to have been wearing appropriate body armor or to be carrying his baton.
Since then, the investigation found that he was not justified in the use of his weapon. He should have found other options, as his partner did. The only result was an oral reprimand, and he was exonerated.
Now, though, the couple is looking to sue the cop for shooting their puppy. Derek Brown and Julia Barecki-Brown claim that their constitutional rights have been violated. The cop came onto their property and shot their puppy to death for no cause.
As a result, they are both seeking damages for emotional distress.
