In Mexico, La Mordida is the tradition of shoving whoever’s birthday it is into the cake. It’s expected, it’s funny, and it’s a birthday. But pushing a newlywed wife’s face into a cake, on their special day, in their special dress, is way out of order. It’s hardly surprising this particular marriage ended in a rapid divorce.
A Reddit user shared their horror at witnessing the groom push a slice of cake into his wife’s face. Just this act alone, even prearranged, is stupid enough. But the fork the piece of cake was on also caused a few problems.
The prongs of the fork caught his wife’s lip as he pushed the cake into her face. The sharp tines cut her face, and, still covered in wedding cake, she had to stem the blood with the fancy napkins. The joke fell flat, and the crowd looked on in awkward horror.
“I still remember the look my wife gave me, with a shocked wtf was he thinking?!?!,” the poster says. “Both of them looked awkward and uncomfortable in the right after moments.” Talk about instant regret.
Does Face Cake Correlate With Rapid Divorce Rates
According to statistics, 40 – 50% of first marriages in the US end in divorce. So, divorce isn’t that uncommon. But the poster noted that the marriage of the man who shoved cake onto his wife’s face got divorced after only about 10 months.
He speculated that people who shove their new spouse’s face in cake at the wedding have a much higher rapid divorce rate. A number of people in the comments backed this theory up, too. “I used to shoot weddings, over 400 in my career. There was a 100% failure rate for the cake smashers. Lol. I would stress to the groom, DO NOT DO THAT… Even if she said it’s ok, I would avoid it,” one commenter added.
Besides ruining someone’s special day, smashing a bit of wedding cake, in particular, into a wife’s face is super dangerous. Wedding cakes are usually tiered and held together with stakes and spears. Unceremoniously grabbing a cake and shoving it into someone’s face could end up with a trip to the ER.
