A woman who ordered a spicy dish, named after a fire-breathing lizard, from a Thai restaurant named after the act of a military seizure of political power, was surprised when her food burned her mouth, and now she is trying to sue.
The Coup de Thai restaurant in Los Gatos, California, is known for its spicy food. Most Thai food is quite hot, with the bird’s eye chilli featuring heavily in dishes. When dining in a Thai restaurant, it is expected that even mild meals will give the heat-averse a little challenge.
But, despite being very uncomfortable with spicy food, Doctor Harjasleen Walia decided to order a dish called Dragon Balls. The spicy chicken balls are made with a number of delicious heard and spices. However, their heat comes from their chilli. The chilli in question is the notorious bird’s eye. These are around 10x hotter than your humble jalapeño.
The doctor told the server that she didn’t like heat and asked for the dish to be less spicy. Being a doctor, I imagine she has never worked in a kitchen. Those Dragon Balls will have been made and mixed way before she arrived, and you can’t just take an entire ingredient out.
Doctor Claims She Sustained Injuries From Spicy Thai Dish
After eating the spicy dragon balls, the doctor said she suffered “permanent injuries and will forever be damaged.” Her lawsuit says she suffered chemical burns and lost her voice due to the spicy food. Although touching certain parts of your body after eating spicy food can feel like it’s burning off, it’s rarely been the cause of chemical burns.
The doctor is trying to make a quick buck from the restaurant. Her lawsuit states that they “failed to take precautions by consulting with health officials or emergency service personnel regarding the risks associated with serving too much Thai chilli in an appetiser like Dragon Balls.”
But the Thai restaurant has pointed out that nobody else has had that problem.
Rather than admit she’s got a horrifically low hot food tolerance and that she was an idiot for ordering a meal labelled as ‘spicy, this doctor is trying to sue a restaurant. Her greedy money-grabbing is just a desperate attempt to fill her pockets.
If you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the Thai kitchen.
