You may think your ex is crazy, but I bet they never tricked you into a marriage behind your back.
A Texas man called off his marriage to his fiancée at the last minute. Despite being engaged, it was not meant to be, and despite having everything planned and ready to go, he backed out. However, his ex-fiancée was having none of that. She was going to get married to this Texas man, whether he wanted it or not.
The 42-year-old newly single man was shocked to discover a gift waiting at his home. A care package containing various items from Bath And Body Works also held a little something extra. His ex had also included an officiated marriage license, declaring the two married. She also threw in a picture of herself with the official document.
Legally, both parties have to be present at the signing of a marriage license, and he was certain he hadn’t been. The man called the police to try to get to the bottom of the marriage mystery.
Under-the-Table Marriage Licenses Are Now A Thing
An investigation was made into how the ex was able to become legally married without the consent of her ex. It turned out that she had some kind of underhanded dealings with a local reverend. He happily signed off on the fake wedding.
His ex was then able to take the document to a county clerk’s office and have it officiated, all without the knowledge of her new husband. Beverly Hills Police Chief Kory Martin was baffled by the whole event. “I don’t think in 23 years I’ve ever heard of anybody who managed somehow to get married to someone who wasn’t present for a ceremony.”
But, for the Texas man, he is now in a bit of a pickle, finding himself married to his ex. Marriage is more than just a romantic gesture; it’s a whole legal process. Now, questions are being raised about what a divorce would mean for the pair.
“I’ve talked to the victim and he’s going through a significant process to try to have to fix this,” Chief Martin explained. “So that’s a whole other situation is not only do you have the concern of ‘What does that mean for my safety and my property?’ You know, which is a huge conversation in this, but also, ‘What do I have to do to fix it?”
Currently, his ex is charged with stalking, but he is also still legally married to her.
