With the advent of internet-linked security cameras such as Amazon’s Ring Doorbell, have come all new ways for people to spy on others. One man found that his ex-wife, with access to his security cameras, has been watching his new family for hundreds of hours.
Anything linked to the internet in any way is susceptible to hacking. Doorbell cameras, although advertised by Amazon as completely safe, are still vulnerable. And yet, people will fill their homes with them, constantly monitoring themselves and their children.
There have been numerous reports of people using these internet-connected security cameras and finding out they have been spied on by people, sometimes thousands of miles away. However, many will still have them all through their homes, allowing anyone to watch their intimate moments.
A man living in the San Diego neighborhood of Rancho Peñasquitos had filled his house with Ring security cameras. According to him, it was because his children had begun sleepwalking. However, his new fiancée began to get a little suspicious of the constant surveillance.
Hundreds Of Hours Of Stolen Moments
The security cameras used by the man and his fiancée displayed a small blue light when someone was recording or watching. Acacia Young noticed that, on occasion, the light was showing when it shouldn’t be.
“I just started to feel kinda crazy,” Young told NBC San Diego. “Like what the hell is going on?” And then she heard the ex-wife talk through the security camera, and she figured out what was going on. “It was his ex-wife’s voice — it was her voice,” she explained. “And I looked up and the blue light was on and the camera was rolling.”
They quickly pulled the invasive cameras down from their house. Investigating the accounts on the security cameras, the man realised his ex-wife still had access. He looked into how much she had been watching them, and the numbers were staggering.
“Ring device logs show that she accessed my account … and viewed video footage for approximately 44,640 minutes … over the span of two months.” His ex-wife had been eavesdropping on all their intimate family moments using the unsecured security camera. As of writing, there have been no criminal charges against the woman.
It’s worth remembering, before you fill your houses with internet-linked security cameras, that you never know who is watching.
