In a scene straight out of an action movie, an Australian man had a fight with an aggressive kangaroo in waist-deep water, almost losing his life.
Kangaroo attacks on humans are rare, but not unheard of. They are known for being incredibly strong and can grow up to 95 kilos. With their massive back legs, they can be a formidable opponent. When attacking, they use them to rip, using the huge claws on their feet.
As Don James recalls, the kangaroo he had a fight with was a big one, but it all started off peacefully. “He was just a big fella, by himself, on the side of the road, feeding and eating grass,” the Aussie recalled.
The roo had probably been forced out of its usual habitat by the floods that had come across New South Wales. The kangaroo was looking for a fight and began attacking nearby cars. This is when it locked eyes with Don and made a move toward him.
Don Throws Hands With Agitated Kangaroo
Recalling the scary moment he knew he was about to fight a kangaroo, Don spoke to ABC News. “He was coming at me flat out, it was sort of like, he was right there,” he told the camera, indicating his side.
As they traded blows, they ended up in the floodwaters that had come into the area. Within minutes, he wasn’t only fighting the huge marsupial, but also doing it in waist-deep floor water. The kangaroo had managed to get on top of him and was trying to drown him.
“So I started throwing backward elbows,” he recalled, fighting for his life. A neighbour spotted his distress and knew this was not a good place for him to be. Watching from her car, she knew Don wasn’t doing this for a laugh.
“This is really bad,” she said to herself. “Something really bad could happen in this situation.” But it was at this point that he managed to fight the kangaroo off, despite the floodwater almost drowning him. In a last-ditch effort, he threw his arms up, and it spooked the roo.
He was under no illusions of how close he came to losing his life, though.
