Ever the party chaser, one of the first miracles Jesus performed was getting a dead dinner party going by turning water into wine, and historians believe they have found the legendary location.
The original story goes that Jesus, at a wedding, was told on the third day that the wine was finished. “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come,” Jesus reportedly said to his mother.
However, his mother convinced him to show off his latest trick, so he complied. “There were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece. Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, “Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.” And they took it. When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine.”
The wedding was said to be in the city of Cana. Jesus performed a lot of his sermons and miracles here. It was a safe place while being persecuted for claiming to be the king of the Jews.
Since then, archaeologists and historians think they have pieced together enough evidence to have uncovered the location where Jesus turned water into wine.
Original Cana Pilgrimage Site Possibly Discovered
“We have uncovered a large Christian veneration cave complex that was used by Christian pilgrims who came to venerate the water-to-wine miracle,” historian Tom McCollough has told Pen News. “This complex was used beginning in the late fifth or early sixth century and continued to be used by pilgrims into the 12th-century Crusader period.”
Inside the tunnels, an altar was found containing a jar that links to the Jesus water into wine miracle. Additionally, beside the remaining jar is space for five more. This furthered the connection to the six used in the original story.
As a result, the previously proposed location of the miracle may be wrong. New evidence points toward this discovery being the actual spot where the miracle was performed. Now, further research is being done into the likelihood of Cana being in this place.
