The idea of putting your life on the line to save a dog, to me, is borderline insanity. But a woman in Connecticut did just that, fighting off a momma bear with nothing but a water bottle and a demented look in her eye.
While out walking her dog in a local woods, Kayleigh Roy saw a bear playing with her cubs. Her dog, a white German shepherd mix, ran to join in. Already, things were not going to go well. Bears are incredibly protective, and a dog is a threat.
The dog, Pheonix, raced off to play with the cubs, leaving Keyleigh behind. By the time she had caught up to the dog, it was already in a tussle with the bear. The huge animal grabbed the dog by the neck, using its teeth to drag it from the cubs and into the woods.
All Kayleigh could do was stand and watch as her beloved pooch was pulled from her. Speaking to the Hartford Courant, she recalled her thought process before attacking the bear with a water bottle. “It was just such a horrible image, and I thought, ‘I can’t leave her,'” she remembered. “I couldn’t have this be our last memory together, so I knew I had to try and grab her. I’m not going to lie, I did think about running back. But I knew I had to do something or I just couldn’t live with myself.”
Water Bottle Bear Beatdown
So, throwing all common sense away, she pursued the bear into the woods, armed with only a heavy metal water bottle. She found the animal with her dog, who was already in a bad way. The sight of blood and her precious puppy in peril sparked a warrior instinct in the lady.
“I started hitting the bear on the face and nose with my bag and bottle in it. I got her a few times with the bottle and one that hit her on the nose pretty good,” Roy said. “But, I was flailing, making myself look big, and screaming like a crazy person. I was surprised that no one heard me.”
Somehow, her attack warned the bear off, and it backed away with its cubs. However, the dog was in a bad way. She rushed it to a vet, where they were amazed to see it had no serious wounds. She risked her life to save an old dog, and it paid off.
