We’ve all, at some point, had to endure the vicinity of someone who stinks. Some people reek because they have a total disregard for personal hygiene, but for one man, he has been cursed with a disorder that makes him smell really bad.
Darryl Hall of Chicago has not had an easy time of it. He was born with a defect that meant that his intestines were outside of his body. The condition, known as Gastroschisis, occurs when a baby doesn’t develop properly in the womb.
The disorder has caused Daryll problems all through his life. “I was already getting bullied a lot in school just based on how I looked and how my condition made me very skinny,” he told the NY Post. “I would try to act all normal. But [kids] would point it out, and it was kind of embarrassing.”
Already, due to his condition, he couldn’t eat like the other kids. He had to be very careful with his food intake. “I would be in a state of mind where my body would just be drained out or fatigued,” He recalled. “I would feel like I’m getting sick.”
But things got much worse when he began to smell terrible.
Unavoidable Funk
His mother noticed the abominable smell from the young man first. Despite his repeated showering, clean clothes, and healthy lifestyle, he began to stink. “I used to get in the shower and get ready for school, and she used to ask me, ‘What is that smell?'” Hall said. “It just spread out through my nose, my mouth, and it was really horrendous.”
Hall had a short colon due to his condition, and it was causing a problem with the bacteria in his gut. He had developed a huge buildup of bacteria, and it was starting to leak from his pores. At the very socially vulnerable age of 14, the man had begun to smell terrible.
But, with thrice-daily antibiotics, he was able to fight back the stench. Even now, he still needs to take the jabs when the smell gets bad. “I can actually tell when it’s about to happen,” he explained. “Usually, it gets triggered when I eat too much of a specific food item, like beef or steak, or chicken.”
