In April 2017, a Chinese man known only as Liu checked himself into the emergency room citing severe abdominal pain. The 49-year-old had been suffering from constipation prior to his visit. However, that was not what caused him to require emergency surgery. It was that his attempt to cure that constipation that led to his hospital visit.
What could Liu have done that caused him such severe pain? During the surgery, this was found up the patient’s rectum:
Apparently, Liu was told by friends that a good cure for constipation would be to insert a live eel up his butthole. Needless to say, his friends were either horrifically misinformed or just playing a cruel, sick joke on the poor man.
According to an article from The Sun, the surgeons said that while inside Liu, the 20-inch long, 1.2-inch thick animal caused damage to his stomach and intestines, almost killing him.
Following the surgery, Dr. Zhao Zhirong, who had not been previously informed by Liu of the fact that a LIVE ANIMAL was inside of him, asked how the creature, identified as an Asian swamp eel, got up there.
“He said the eel swam up by itself,” Dr. Zhirong said. “But he later admitted that he put it there himself while following a folk remedy for bowel obstruction.”
After recovering from the surgery, Liu is lucky to be alive. We hope that the life he lives now is free of bowel obstruction, swamp creatures, and very unloving friends. There is still no clear word, however, on the fate of the eel.
Well, what do you think? Is that not the craziest, most pathetic self-treatment story you have ever heard, or have you heard worse? If so, we would love to hear about it, so let us know in the comments below!
