Ari Septian Pratama, a 21-year-old lad unlucky in his pursuit of love, masqueraded as an Indonesian police officer for a month in order to woo the fairer sex. While the stunt started as a dare, his tailor-made uniform and convincing, yet non-functioning, weapon was enough to attract the affection of more than 10 women, reportedly.
“I promised many (of the women I dated) that I would propose marriage to them,” said Pratama, who carried out his scheme under the alias of forensic scientist Julian Saputra. “… I slept with most of them. Some are even already engaged.”
While he may have been right that women often do find comfort in a man in uniform, he wrongfully assumed that they would still feel comfortable with him asking them for money.
Despite his own refuting of these claims, two of Pratama’s victims testified that he convinced them to withdraw money from their own accounts to be given to him. This aroused suspicion in one woman, who checked with the authorities to confirm the legitimacy of Pratama’s badge, initiating the manhunt.
Pratama was found and arrested whilst bearing his costume, and confessed to the crime soon after.
Impersonating a cop is a petty crime. Using that front to get a date is a laughable case of desperation. Using it to date and sleep with at least 10 women is shocking. Using it to extort money from those women is disgusting.
