Everybody has a date that goes a little awry. Maybe, a girlfriend who has an annoying laugh or a boyfriend that just won't shut up, but some people? They like to date people with rather more issues than that.
Redditors recently shared the worst significant others that they or other people in their families had brought home. It makes for very interesting reading. Check out these incredible stories now.

The Engagement Is Probably Off
“This happened to my friend: Boyfriend asked her parents for permission to marry her after only a few meetings. They are apprehensive but say yes. Thing is, he’s got no money – so asks her Dad for a £5k loan to take her on her dream holiday and to buy an engagement ring.
A year later and the holiday isn’t booked.
The family all get together for New Years and Dad starts to take the boyfriend to one side for a chat, no one knows what was said between them. Next thing she knows is that her boyfriend is leaving in the car without saying goodbye. Turns out that boyfriend had gambling debts and no intentions of marriage. Her parents never got the money back.”
And The Trashiest SO Award Goes To…
“My sister’s fiancé is a registered offender. Twice. At 21 years old, he had ‘consensual’ relations with a 16-year-old. Got caught and convicted, put on the list. Eight months later (not even a whole year), he violated a different girl about the same age.
He most recently got out of jail because he failed to notify the registry of an address change, which all such offenders MUST do before moving. If you’re unaware, this involves making a phone call and not much more. He still didn’t do it and had to go away for three months.
At a family reunion, he bragged that his main source of income was buying smokes from the Indian reservation and selling them to minors. He has the Horde symbol (from World of Warcraft) tattooed on his bicep with his username tattooed underneath it. He is missing all of his front teeth. He owns three vehicles, none of which are in his name.
Just recently, he claims to have had a stroke and can’t speak or use his right arm anymore. This was proven false when he ran into my mom at the store carrying a basket of groceries in one hand and his 4-year-old son in the other. My sister seems to be in on this ruse, but they are both just so ridiculous that they think they have everyone fooled.
I don’t talk to either of them anymore.”
This One’s On The House
“My brother brought back a girl five years younger. She couldn’t cook, couldn’t work, couldn’t talk about things other than gossip, celebrity, and fashion, and went to beauty salon once a week (all shopping and beauty costs come from my brother’s pocket, who got his money from mom). She’d get angry with my brother over the smallest things (she threatened my brother to break up once because he cancelled their Saturday date, but my brother cancelled it because my mother suddenly fainted and needed to be taken to a hospital). She doesn’t have any brain but her womanly assets are big. She often went to clubs and got wasted without telling my brother; brother thought she was the most chaste woman he ever met.
When she came for dinner, she sat like a princess and didn’t help with anything at all. If she wanted drinks or anything, she’d ask my mother like she was her waitress to bring it for her. My parents were enraged but my brother loved her so much that he finally married her.
She doesn’t do anything. She wakes up around twelve every day while my brother works hard every day.
When she wanted a new place, instead of seeing my brother’s wallet’s capacity and renting a house, she insisted on buying a grand new house or said no wedding. And she had the audacity to pester my brother to ask my parents to buy it for them. Well, my parents surrendered and bought them a house fully furnished with pricey furniture, just like she wanted.
My mom still suffers every day.”
Moving Down In Life
“My sister’s boyfriend was homeless. She was 17 and he was 25. At the time, she was living with her ex and his family because she ran away from home and told them that she was abused and the mother ‘always wanted a daughter’ as she had three boys. When they broke up, she refused to leave because she refused to believe the relationship was over. She found the homeless man while she had been following her ex and his girlfriend on dates and started crying outside of a hot dog place. He had rotting teeth, was overweight, and used the pickup line, ‘What’s a pretty girl like you crying in a place like this?’
She then let her homeless boyfriend move in with her/her ex/her exes family.
She ended up getting pregnant and they kicked her out. Then she announced her pregnancy during her eulogy at our great grandmother’s funeral. When my mother, a respected scientist, met him for the first time, she punched him in the face right outside a Secretary of State. My sister ended up having to file for a protective order because he was physically abusive to her and their child among the other issues that he had.
Immediately after that one, she got pregnant up by another guy, who just so happens to also be our cousin’s baby daddy. Making our cousin’s daughter, her son, and her unborn child both cousins and siblings at the same time.
Yes, family reunions are awkward.”
The Unavailable Father
“My sister’s partner/baby daddy is awful. She got pregnant with twins within a few weeks of them dating. He’s super rude, thinks he’s the smartest person in the world (thinks he’s an expert on any subject) and talks down to my family. He’s one of those atheists who thinks anyone who is religious is an idiot on principle and my parents are both Christian.
They’re the kind that would never force their beliefs on anyone, but this guy is constantly trying to start fights with them over theology. Oh, he also drinks all the time and hasn’t had a job in the last 9 years (the age of their twins) because he got arrested for drinking and driving and then he refused to comply with the court’s conditions to get his license back. (Also, he was caught after those drinks driving WITH my sister in the car…luckily their babies weren’t with them).
What else? Oh, she has caught him cheating on her, she’s tried to leave a few times but keeps going back to him. He spends all the money she makes on his drinking problem and other illicit substances (and DVDs for some reason), tries to pick fights with my brother and is just an all-around awful person.”
When They Steal The A1 Sauce
“When she was 18, my daughter took a temporary leave of her senses and started dating this guy who was, basically, your stereotypical drummer in a band. He had no job because his band was ‘about to get signed and go on tour,’ he had tattoos that looked like they were done by an out of control 5-year-old with a nervous twitch during a blackout, he didn’t have a driver’s license because he could ‘always get rides from friends,’ referred to me as ‘Dude’ and my wife as ‘Babe,’ and he lived with his singer and his 2 dogs in a camping trailer behind his uncle’s house.
The first night he met us (me and my wife), after finding out my wife was an EMT/paramedic, he asked her how bad he’d have to be hurt to get the strong stuff administered to him in the ambulance. He then followed that up by saying that he ‘almost wanted to get in a wreck’ so my wife would give him CPR. My wife (politely) excused herself and pulled our daughter aside to tell her she was ‘messing up royally,’ but it was (of course) blown off as ‘oh he’s just messing around’ kind of thing. We decided at that point we’d just stand back, watch the chaos and step in only if needed, and let our daughter learn a ‘life lesson.’
My daughter was with him about a month and a half and in that time:
- he got busted once for trying to steal about $15 worth of steaks and a bottle of A-1 Sauce from a Food Lion
- He vomited in her car twice after drinking too much at gigs
- He asked her (several times) to text him inappropriate pics so he could see what he’d ‘eventually be spending intimate time with
- He decided to do a ‘dine and dash’ and ran out on her when they were eating at Denny’s one morning after a gig
- And finally, he ‘borrowed’ her cell phone to ‘make a call,’ found her best friend’s phone number, and used my daughter’s phone to send her friend some pics of his junk saying that it was an offer to her (the friend) since my daughter ‘wouldn’t get with him.’
That was the last straw and my daughter kicked him to the curb and my wife and I rejoiced.”
Chaos Comes From Germany
“The first girl I ever became intimate with had to be the worst and most stressful because none of my other relationships have caused any real grief for my parents or I. They liked some more than others but…this one takes the cake for quite a few reasons.
So this was in Germany, and I was at a house party when I was 16. I had just struck out on the girl I was going for with this girl starts chatting me up. I honestly didn’t have a lot of interest in her, but she was ‘alright.’
I went to the kitchen to grab a drink, she followed me and showed me her ‘girls,’ grabbed my man bits and said she wanted to do me right now. I was like ‘Sure.’
I come to find out she’s crazy; she also had depression issues, daddy issues, like to lie a lot, and what not. I dated her for about 6 weeks in which she was generally a complete and utter nut case. She was really awesome in bed, but holy cow she was a freaking lunatic, but never the less.
We broke up, but this is where it gets juicy. Now, she lived about 45-50 minutes away from us and about 2 months after we broke up, she called my mom to say she was pregnant and it was my baby.
Well, that evening at dinner was a lot of fun. I ended up getting a job in fast food to start saving up for my new baby at 16. This was in August, by the way, so throughout the school year, I worked to save up for my kid.
My mom was the one who talked to my ex, she wanted to make sure her grandbaby was alright. My mom wanted to go to the doctor’s appointments and my ex was fine with that but always had a story to tell. Whatever, she was not quite right. Then she started asking for money, which is odd because there’s a lot of public assistance for situations like this in Germany.
Finally, it came time for the baby and nothing.
We wait, we call, we text, nothing…we are worried. Sure my kid’s mom isn’t perfect but I’m going be the best dad I can be.
We track down my ex, we find out she was never pregnant and was just trying to convince me to come back to her again. Oh, my life, was I so incredibly happy, my mom was furious though.”
The Monster Comes To Dinner
“My cousin was raised by my mother and is 10 years younger than I am. Her first boyfriend was a real piece of work.
He was just… Creepy. He barely spoke to any of us when he’d come around. We just chalked it up to social anxiety and let it go. However, he took a hard left turn into Awfulville later on.
So, one day, the family goes out to a hockey game and brings him along. We go to a local burger joint and we spend several minutes basically begging him to order something.
The food comes and he refuses to eat it. What’s the reason we ask?
‘I don’t like apes touching my food.’ (Our waitress was a black woman)
So.. the first full sentence he utters is incredibly prejudiced. Great start!
Other interactions over the next few weeks were even more awkward and aggressive. At one point, he insulted my mother for getting her second college degree in her late 40s. When I called him out on it, he got in my face and wanted to physically fight me.
Thankfully, cousin broke it off with him pretty quickly. He ended up stalking her for a while until she got a new (and much cooler) boyfriend.”
“The Guy Before Me Set A Very Low Bar”
“Before my wife and I dated, she had a boyfriend that gave her parents an instant migraine when his name was mentioned. The worst thing he did was when my wife and her family went on a vacation and asked this guy to watch their place while they were gone.
The guy loses the family cat (she actually was hiding in the closet). But the worst of it was he decides to throw a party at her house. They drank every bottle he could find in the house, guys chew spit right into the carpet, tile floor was stained with whatever everyone spilled (which also left sticky residue), house reeked of smoke and pot.
If that wasn’t bad enough, he did not bother to clean it up, so my wife and her parents walked into a pit when they got home from vacation.
So the guy goes to their house afterward to return their key. He at least apologized for having the party and losing the cat. My wife’s parents still offered to pay him for watching the house (not sure why), and instead of refusing it for what happened, he took it. My wife was super angry about it and decided this guy was not worth it. Dumps him, and a couple months later, meets me.”
A Real Class Act
“Our son, 18 and still in school, brings home a 26 year old who has a 4 your old son. No decent job, no plans. After a couple of weeks, I ask him what he sees in her, he says he loves her. After several months, they go to a concert, she gets invited backstage and tells him she is staying there with the band. Hmmmmm… I have to pick him up at 2:00 am in the morning, he is still defending her, even though it is clear she is a groupie and is banging the band. It didn’t last much longer than that. Several years later I heard she tried to commit suicide in front of her kid.”
He Clearly Didn’t Take Driver’s Ed
“One of my client’s daughters allowed her boyfriend to drive her new car the day before they got it insured and he crashed into someone. No one’s hurt, but my client had his license pulled and has to pay upwards of $10,000. He’s taking responsibility, but dang.
I’m not sure how the boy’s still alive, must take a lot of restraint.”
Shark Boy
“Right after my daughter broke up with her first serious boyfriend, his ‘best friend’ started checking in on her more and more. Then he’d meet her at the local park (they were 15/16) to walk around, started saying things like the first boyfriend didn’t respect her, etc. She insisted his intentions were pure and friendly when I explained that they were not. Innocence is naive like that.
Eventually, he came by to pick her up when he had access to a car and I met him in person. If you didn’t really speak to him, you’d probably think he was an alright kid, but I did speak to him. Everything was just a little too polite from him. Overly emphasized, ‘yes/no, ma’am.’ Sharky smile with unengaged eyes. I’ve dated a few lousy dudes in my time, so you just sort of learn to trust the vibe you’re picking up. Even if this guy wasn’t going after his best friends girl 2 weeks after they broke up, he would have been a thumbs down for me. I tell daughter as such. I’m obviously too dumb to know what I’m talking about because I am a parent.
Fast forward a few weeks later and she tells me she is starting to have feelings for shark boy and he has asked her out. I told her I did not approve of the relationship (or any relationship so soon after having such a serious one so young). I didn’t like or trust that kid. Apparently, my approval mattered enough for her to tell him as much and suggested they ‘try going on a few dates to take it slow and see if mom comes around.’
Kid. Goes. Off. He’s enlisting in the marines and needs someone to fly out to Texas to see him, not some girl to go on dates with. He’s not going to waste his time on some girl who isn’t a sure thing. He couldn’t believe she’d been leading him on this whole time, that he’d put all that time in ‘for nothing.’
She came home a little upset but the best part of my briefing on the encounter was her walking in my room saying ‘MOM! You were right, I just dodged a freaking bullet!’ Hmmm…guess mom isn’t so stupid after all.
Kid ended up enlisting and got in some trouble a few years later sending pictures that he shouldn’t to his other best friend’s girl, who was 16 at the time. Says his chance of surviving the marines is slim to none so he’s not going to be bothered by being held back by morals…real winner there.”
The Lady Lied Over And Over Again
“I dated a girl right after high school that was really awesome, super fun, we liked all the same stuff and the intimate side of things was absolutely great. She would do whatever I wanted. I thought it was awesome.
Until people started hanging out with me less, which was weird. I tended to be pretty outgoing and had loads of friends.
Well, apparently, she was going around threatening them, telling them I wanted to be alone and some other lies.
I found this out when my best friend Sean sent photos of her standing outside his window just staring at him at like 3 in the morning.
This had been going on for about a week when he sent me the photos.
I broke up with her and she lost it. She tried to block me from leaving her house and tried to force herself on me begging she’d do anything to keep me.
Long story short, a restraining order and moving to a new place seems to have shaken her… but I still get texts from her, usually intimate photos or stories in order to get me to come back.”
