A police officer in Lynden, Washington was seen to be in apparent slow pursuit of an old woman on her mobility scooter. Several people saw this strange and seemingly cruel act taking place, as the old woman slowly made her way down the road with the police patrol vehicle trailing right behind, lights flashing.
The local police station received many phone calls from concerned citizens.
One woman who saw the occurrence said, “What it looked like at the time was this older lady on a Rascal cruising down the road. The cop car with the lights flashing going behind her is what caught my attention You can’t make that stuff up.”
The police officer in question had to explain to the public that this was not an act of strange cruelty, but instead an act of kindness and empathy.
“I wasn’t trying to stop her, said the officer. I wasn’t trying to detain her. I was just trying to get her back to her home. I just treated her the way I would’ve wanted somebody to treat my mom.“
It turns out that the woman was just lost and having trouble finding her way home. The officer was concerned for the woman, who was traveling beside a relatively busy and potentially dangerous road. “It’s a pretty major state route where semis and cars travel,” the officer added.
The officer concluded by stating that, “Our motto with the State Patrol is service with humility,” This particular case took a little more patience and humility but I wouldn’t have done it any differently.”
Its nice to read an American police story that doesnt involve brutality, but instead involves kindness. The thing to take away here is to never jump to conclusions and judge a situation just based on surface appearances. The truth isnt always obvious, and appearances alone are never enough.
