We've all kept secrets before, but there are some that we would take to the grave. Check out the juiciest secrets people know about someone close to them.
An Absolutely Disgusting Discovery
“Someone I know had a thing for older, married guys when she was in her late teens. It was well known about her. Then one day it abruptly stopped. We all assumed some wife caught her and scared the crap out of her.
Well, the ‘truth’ is far more interesting. She met another older married guy and slept with him three times. On the third night, her grandmother showed up at her house just as he was leaving.
Grandma said, ‘Well, I see you two finally found out.’ The guy left, not bothering to wait for an explanation.
When she asked grandma, ‘found out what?’, it turns out the guy she thought was her father wasn’t. Her mother had an affair with a married guy and got pregnant. That married guy just walked out of her house.
So, yeah, she found out she had been sleeping with her real father. He didn’t know, either. Only mother and grandmother knew the truth of who the real father was.
When she told me, I was in the ‘I don’t believe you’ camp. But she had been partying when she told me. She’s now in her 30s, so she had no real reason to lie.”
The Quite And Unassuming Accountant
“I went to the office on New Year’s day several years ago to pick up something I’d forgotten.
Our quiet and unassuming (male) accountant was also in the office, wearing a dress, makeup, and quite fabulous sparkly nail polish.
Being New Year’s day, he could easily have said ‘Woah man, I went to a wacky party last night!’ but he tried to hide under his desk and the opportunity was kind of lost.
I never told anyone, but I feel my expense claims were always processed slightly faster than anyone else’s.”
“He Had Nightmares About What Happened”
“My grandfather killed his friend. My grandfather came from rural Mexico to work legally in the United States in the ’60s and ’70s. He worked in agriculture as most who came did and made good friends. He was away from the family for half a year or more before going home. After finishing a work season, he went back to Mexico with a friend he had known for years. They were traveling together and had just passed the border into Mexico. They were walking on a dirt path alone when suddenly his friend pulled out a knife and attempted to stab my grandfather. My grandfather managed to dodge the knife, but they fought and rolled on the ground.
He fought for his life and ended up stabbing his friend. His friend wanted to steal all the money he was bringing back home to the family. He left the body somewhere only he knew. He went home and never told my grandmother. He had nightmares about what happened and visions about the man he killed. He felt guilty for not giving him a proper burial. He eventually went back towards the border and found him and buried him properly. He said the nightmares stopped. He never regretted it as he was doing it in self-defense and didn’t tell anyone but my mother and me. My grandmother has no clue about it, and will never know since my grandfather passed away a few years ago.”
He Was Living A Double Life
“My mother told me she thought my father had a secret life but she couldn’t prove it. I followed him to work one day, and he traveled to a some woman’s house in the bad area of south Baltimore. I never told my mother, but I never trusted my father after that.
Keep in mind, in my entire life my father who was a corporate professional at a company with good benefits, never took a vacation day. I never remember him taking any vacation in my entire life, and he almost never took a sick day. He never had time for us. He claimed he always had to work. He would never help me work on my car which he knew a lot about, or help with anything in my life. He always claimed he didn’t have the time.
After 30 years, my father lost his job during a layoff. I was at Home Depot with him, and he met an ex-coworker and the coworker proceeded to say, ‘You had to know this was coming, you were never at work. You took every single minute of vacation and sick time and even took time off without pay.’ I was stunned!
I realized at that point my father had a parallel life my family knew nothing about.
My mother died and then my father died. I was in charge of his estate and discovered that he had another home and that a woman lived there. He owned the home outright with no mortgage, he paid all the bills, water, electric, cable TV, etc. He never charged any rent. Our family never knew any of this existed. The woman was a piece of crap. She was a trashy chain smoker who was loud and rude. Her brothers and other family members were all living at my family’s expense.
When my father died and I discovered the second life, I called the woman and told her my father had passed. Her immediate words were, ‘Who got this house?’ She didn’t say, ‘I’m sorry to hear of your loss’ or ‘Oh no!’ It was basically, ‘What did I get?’ One day I had to speak with her and her brother answered the phone. He was irate that my father didn’t give them the house, claiming that they took care of the house, cleaned it, etc. He said that they didn’t do any of the repairs but we looked after the place. ‘How did he not leave it to us in his will?!’ he said. Then they demanded a copy of the will, which I refused to provide.
She didn’t get anything, and the day I told her to move out, I replay in my mind her cold interest in what she was going to get when she heard he had died.
My brother idolized my father and won’t believe he had a second family. In his mind, they were tenants. But I looked at all of his bank records and he never collected a penny from these people and paid out a huge amount of money taking care of them. My brother would prefer to think my father was a ‘secret landlord.'”
What Happens At The Campgrounds, Stays At The Campgrounds
“The summer after I graduated high school, my group of friends and I went camping at a campground where one of the guy’s family has a permanent trailer. We generally do this every year. This year was different in that the girls actually came up with us for the first time since we were all 18 and there were no parents around. There was a creek nearby that was popular to tube down, and we would do it almost every day.
Later in the week, the girls decided they were not going to join us for tubing. We start out and just have a fun time. Eventually, a storm starts brewing on the horizon and the speed of the water picks up a little. We keep our eyes on it but don’t worry too much. Shortly after, a cut military looking type man on the side of the creek with the road comes up to the edge and asks us if we’ve seen his daughter and her friend anywhere. He describes them and we all say no, but we’ll keep an eye out for them and he continues up the river.
Maybe five minutes later, we hear laughing and thrashing on the opposite bank in the brush. I think I hear what sounds like muffled screams. Being the curious bloke I am, I convince the rest of the guys to check it out. We land and quietly walk up to the sounds. Sure enough, the two girls that were being searched for were here being assaulted by two older guys and a third guy filming. We immediately rush in to stop them and pull them off. My friend wrestled and I had numerous years of martial arts training, so they stopped fighting and ran quickly. My one friend managed to grab the camera before they ran. We escorted the sobbing girls back to her father in the camp, handed him the camera without saying anything and left.
They found two of the boys’ bodies beaten and hanged out in the woods about a mile from camp. The guys all know who it was and the girls never heard the story.”
A Prank Gone Wrong
“A friend of mine was playing a prank and killed two people. He and two of his friends were driving at night on the highway. He was in the passenger seat and his friend was driving, and a third guy was sleeping in the backseat. He was bored and thought it would be funny to grab the wheel and jerk it to the side. They crashed, of course.
The driver died at the scene and the other friend, who was sleeping in the back seat, died at the hospital. The passenger was the only one wearing a seatbelt and wasn’t injured to speak of. To my knowledge, I’m the only other person who knows it wasn’t an accident. I’ve been wanting to get this off my chest for years.”
Respect And Fear Are Sometimes Intertwined
“My last birthday party consisted of a bonfire and drinks in my backyard. My boss stuck around late after everyone left and we talked most of the night.
He had been partying so much that I don’t think he remembers telling me that his sister was assaulted and he found the guy and killed him. He even laughed about how hard it was to bury a body.
I’ve never respected/feared a man so much in my life.”
He Messed Up Big Time
“A parent of a friend of mine works for a major financial company that, after a new employee messed with a server, lost more than a decade’s worth of data about a month ago.
It was never backed up and consisted primarily of tax records for thousands of families, including my friend’s family. The company has done everything in its power to keep the story on lockdown, and so far, it seems to have worked.”
Scandal In An Affluent Family
“I know a guy who dated a lot of girls. His family is rich and pretty well connected in my community. A while ago, he was arrested by the FBI and on his PC, they found thousands of child pictures and videos. His family paid a lot of money to local news so that they don’t put the news of his arrest. I followed his court case for a bit then suddenly his case just disappeared as in I can’t find it in the court record. I had no idea what that meant.
This guy is still around, still in school, and living a normal life as if nothing happened. I know this because at the time I was dating someone from his family. What I remember the most was the family’s reaction when it happened. They were more shocked by the gay part instead of pictures of children or his future.”
When Puppy Fever Goes Way, Way Too Far
“Some 25 years ago a couple of friends of mine (we’ll call them Rob and Ariel) started dating and eventually it got serious. One evening they were having a party, and they both were partying pretty hard. In his stupor, Rob confessed to me that Ariel had a fetish for going all the way with animals and that she’d gotten it on with his family’s two Huskies.
When they sobered up, they made no indication that they remembered the conversation with me, so I pretended it didn’t happen. About a year or two later, Rob and Ariel moved in together. A couple months after that, they adopted two male Huskies and about a year later, they got married. About ten years ago, they had marriage problems and divorced. About a year later, Rob got sick and passed away. Ariel moved (with the dogs) to a new home, and I lost touch with her. About five years ago, I learned that Ariel had remarried to a guy who owns/runs an animal shelter.”
The Hypocrisy Is Too Real
“The girl I hated in high school who goes to college out of state got a new boyfriend almost immediately after she started school. They’ve been together for two years now. She likes to share a lot of religious/faithfulness/holier-than-thou stuff on social media and posts a lot about their great relationship.
I recently found out that she’s been fooling around with her ex-boyfriend every time she comes home from school. For two years.”
That Cushy Job Didn’t Just Fall Into Her Lap
“A family member has a big cushy job within the community. I always wondered how she got it. She acts like she thinks she is so much better than the rest of the family and terribly important. I was over at a friend’s house and saw some paperwork for an organization both the friend and the family member were involved in.
The family member’s bio was listed, including her multiple degrees from a certain university and her accomplishments and interests. She never attended that university. The university she did attend, she only completed one semester. The accomplishments are bogus. She listed that she was an instructor in a recreational sport that she only dabbled in the ’80s. It’s all a lie. I don’t want to destroy her life, but I have to bite my tongue often.”
“It Would Shock Their Family To Know”
“I thought my dad was someone else until I was 12 years old. I found out my mom fooled around with a married guy, got pregnant with me, then married another guy who thought I was his kid. They told me when I was 12. To this day, my real father knows, but his entire family does not.
I have a sister and brother from him that don’t know. He is rich and well to do and in politics. Not sure if his wife knows, but it would cause big issues probably if it were known. His kids are adults now, but it would shock their family to know I am kind of one of them!”
Little Does She Know
“Before I was in a relationship, I fooled around with my friend’s ex. He was my friend too and was always a better friend to me than she was. I think it would crush her if she knew, but she really was a bad friend to me.
When I revealed I had a crush on him, she said something along the lines of, ‘Huh. I would be kind of upset, but he’s not and will never be into you, so I’m not worried.’ I told her that was a mean thing to say, and she just replied with, ‘Yeah, but it’s true.'”
Lost At Sea
“I was working on the oil rigs. One of the guys was addicted to gambling, lost a lot of money, his wife wanted to leave him, etc. He was in a bad way. The thing about working at sea is you’re isolated for a long period of time with nothing much to do but think. One night, I try to call him on the radio, and I get no response.
Half hour later, I find his overalls and boots folded up neatly by the railings. The guy had thrown himself into the sea. He was long gone. We made the call to ditch his boots and overalls so the company would pay out to his wife for death in service and she could claim insurance money. It went down recorded as an accident. We told no one. I still believe it was the right thing to do.”
Not The Type Of Eskimo Sister That You Can Shake Off
“One of my close friend’s ex-boyfriend has been sleeping with her best friend and the best friend’s mother.
The best friend doesn’t know that her mom is also fooling around with him, but the mom knows he is sleeping with her daughter. This best friend can’t figure out why her mother has been so nasty to her the past two years.”
Love Thy Neighbor
“A guy who grew up in my neighborhood is actually my half-brother, and he has no idea.
My mom and his mom were best friends. Apparently, his mom was my dad’s best friend.”
You Might Find An Unwelcome Surprise In The K-Mart Bathrooms
“My uncle was arrested for soliciting intimate acts in a K-Mart men’s bathroom. Apparently, he messed up and solicited an off-duty cop. It showed up on the news late one night, and my mom asked my dad, ‘Isn’t that your brother’s name?’ So he called him later and found out it really was him, but no one else in the family knows.
His son is also gay, but he only told my parents, me, and my sister because he was worried how the rest of the family would react.”
He’s Obviously Extremely Confident He Won’t Get Caught
“My old boss is a swinger. But he frequently cheats on his wife with his employees.
And she works in the building and crosses paths with these women regularly.”
Um, Excuse Me?
“My friend was assaulted by a church pastor that her parents were good friends with. She told her parents about it a couple of weeks after it happened. She waited so long because she was afraid to tell anyone for fear that they wouldn’t believe her.
Two days after, she told her dad the pastor was found dead lying in the middle of his living room with multiple stab wounds. She told me that when she told her dad the news, he smiled and said, ‘I know.'”
