When this woman lost her deceased husband’s photos, she went back to Dick Smith Electronics to retrieve them. One of the employees went above and beyond to help her keep her memories alive. Here is the story:
“My best memory at DSE was when an old lady walked in to the store and went straight for the external hard drives. Not being that hard to see the frustration in her face, I approached and asked if there was anything I could help with. She then quickly took a WD HDD out of her purse and then burst into tears.. -“Someone sold us this last week and said you can put all your photos in,” “Yes, that is right maam. You can save your photos as well as your videos in it. What seems to be problem,!”, I asked in doubt -“well, my husband and I put all our photos in it last week. My husband died at the hospital last night and I went back home this morning to see the photos and they are all gone! They were our sweetest memories and I cannot find them in it (pointing to the HDD) anymore..” I tried to calm her down and walked her to one of the note booth, where I plugged the HDD in and shockingly saw the HDD is clean. I initially thought the photos were not moved to the HDD but then after some probing questions I realizesd she has accidentally deleted all the photos!!!!! I knew data recovery is not a service DSE would provide or if I was allowed to help her even after asking for permission from the store manager. I asked her to stay there, walked to the office, asked for my lunchbreak then went back and picked up my laptop (I also do web design so have some decent photo editing and photo recovery and HDD disaster recovery tools). We sat down at the table for rentsmartused and I plugges in my laptop a d as I started recovering the HDD, the photos poped up one after another and I was amazed how the old lady was changing moods from being happy to crying then being excited then crying then going silent for few seconds then smiling and on and on after seeing each and photo being recovered.. It took us about 4 hours to complete the recovery and I had to go back to work after my lunch break was over but was watching her as I was serving other customers on the floor. She even told me the stories behind some of the photos as I was passing by to check if she is ok. I could not recover all the photos some were distorted some were partly black but she was extremely happy with the final results. At then end and as the store was closing we wrapped up the recovery, she hugged me, gave me her number, cried and then left. I never saw her again but I am sure she was the happiest customer I ever had, and that hug was my sweetest memory at DSE.”
